The typical lifespan is 3,000–5,000 splices, after which replacement is recommended. Electrodes are sold as matched pairs and must be installed with precise tip alignment (gap and protrusion) per the splicer manufacturer's specifications. Different models are designed for specific fusion splicer brands (Fujikura, Sumitomo, Inno, Furukawa, Corning, etc.) and fiber types (standard SM, MM, or large-diameter fibers). After installation, the splicer's arc calibration routine must be performed to optimize discharge parameters for the new electrodes. Genuine electrodes or high-quality third-party equivalents ensure splice quality and equipment warranty compliance.
