This process creates a continuous, low-loss, and high-strength connection that is essential for modern fiber optic networks. The machine first aligns the prepared fiber ends—either by cladding alignment (faster, suitable for most single-mode fibers) or core alignment (more precise, using cameras and image processing to directly align the fiber cores, resulting in splice losses as low as 0.02 dB). After alignment, a precisely controlled electric arc melts the fiber ends, and the machine pushes them together to form a seamless splice. An integrated heater then shrinks a protective sleeve over the splice. Modern splicing machines feature a high-resolution color touchscreen (4-5 inches), automated arc calibration, wind protection, and a ruggedized design for field use. A rechargeable lithium battery typically supports 200-300 splices per charge.
